Kenyan Purple Tea, Loose Leaf

Kenyan Purple is a rare loose-leaf tea from Kenya's plantations. They say it is what Kenyan marathon runners drink — with milk. Thanks to its high anthocyanin content the liquor comes out not the usual tea colour but a pale pink-purple.

The best part: add a squeeze of lemon and the colour shifts to deep pink in front of you. The taste is soft and many-layered — meadow flowers, green pea, cut grass, toasted bread, cream, baked milk, caramel, basil and grapefruit.

How to brew

• Water off the boil, let it cool a little
• Steep longer than an ordinary black tea
• Keep a lemon slice at hand to watch the colour change
