Legend has it that the daughter of a Spanish captain, Maracuya Garcia, was captured by an indigenous tribe whose chief fell deeply in love with her. He died defending his people, and beautiful Maracuya died of grief. Where she fell, a flower grew that later gave a juicy, fragrant fruit — named passion fruit in memory of this story.
