Kumquat is a Chinese citrus fruit whose name translates as "golden orange". In Cantonese this berry is called "gam gat" — "golden tangerine".
Unlike an orange, kumquat is eaten whole, peel included — the peel holds most of the essential oils and flavor, while the sourish seeds are removed before eating.
Dried kumquat is a great substitute for lemon in tea, and also a tasty snack on its own with a rich citrus aroma.
